Why keep it
Here is when you’ll need it.
A warranty claim
The manufacturer asks when it was installed, by whom, and the serial number off the unit. Without those the claim stops there.
An insurance claim
Your insurer wants to know what the roof looked like before the storm. Photographs taken afterwards cannot answer that.
The buyer’s inspection
An open permit or undocumented work turns up in the buyer’s inspection, and you fix it on their schedule.
Your tax bill when you sell
What you spent improving the house counts against the gain you are taxed on. Only the part you can show receipts for.
Before you hire
Know what a contract is missing before you sign it.
Homeowners compare quotes on price because price is the only line that is always filled in.
- Quote comparisonHome+ lays two to six quotes on the same rows, so you can see what one of them did not say.
- Contract checklist names the standard terms your contract does not contain, for your state and your trade.
- Question list turns the gaps into the questions to ask, in the order to ask them.
- Deposit check compares what the contract wants up front against what your state allows a home-improvement contract to take.
- Contractor lookupHome+ finds the license, the bond, the insurance and the registered entity. Where we find nothing, we say we found nothing.
The first week
The clock nobody tells you is running.
You signed at your door on Tuesday. Your right to cancel may run to Friday, and it is the only thing in the app that can save you the whole contract.
- Right to cancel counts the federal three business days and your own state’s window, from the date you actually signed.
- Certificate of insurance records the expiry date and tells you when it lands before your completion date.
- Baseline photographs a shot list for your trade, taken before anybody starts. Ten minutes nobody tells you to spend.
- Payment schedule turns the contract’s milestones into dates, so what is due is a date and not a phone call.
While the work happens
Photograph the things that are about to be covered up.
Underlayment, flashing, the deck. Once the shingles are on, what is underneath is a matter of opinion.
- Stage shots tells you which six photographs to take today, off the checklist for your trade. A completable task, not a habit.
- Change orders records what was quoted, what you approved and when, before the work starts.
- The journal one dated thread per project: notes, deliveries, site visits, no-shows, damage, decisions.
- Schedule against paid two numbers off the contract’s own milestones. No adjective, no opinion about progress.
When it is finished
The half hour worth the most money in the whole job.
Most residential disputes begin at the final invoice, and almost nobody does the arithmetic.
- Final reconciliation base plus approved changes, against invoiced, against paid. Three numbers, one screen.
- Warranty registration roofing, HVAC and solar warranties are routinely void without registration inside 30 to 90 days. We count the days and we link the form.
- Lien waivers tracks a waiver from the contractor and from every supplier who filed a notice on your house.
- Permit close-out an open permit surfaces when you sell, and it is expensive then.
- What you own serials, data plates, paint codes, filter sizes, the breaker map, the shutoffs.
The years after
Year one is when you do the work. Year six is when it pays.
A warranty you registered in year one is why a claim in year six is a phone call instead of an argument.
- Warranty vault every warranty with its real start date, its term, and the conditions that keep it alive.
- Storm alertsHome+ a hail or high-wind warning over your address, with the six-shot check to take while it is still fresh.
- Maintenance a warranty requires a prompt only where a manufacturer’s condition asks for one. No generic homeowner calendar.
- Pre-expiry check ninety, sixty and thirty days before workmanship cover ends. A problem found inside the window is a different conversation.
- Capital improvement basis a running total with receipts, sorted capital or repair, exportable the year you sell.
- Insurance file improvement value against your dwelling limit, with the age of every roof and system.
- Annual home report what you spent, what is covered, what expires, what is due.
Deadlines
Deadlines nobody tells you about.
| What | How long you get |
|---|---|
| Right to cancel a door-to-door contract | 3 business days + your state |
| Manufacturer warranty registration | 30–90 days |
| Certificate of insurance | the date on the certificate |
| A supplier’s notice on your house | per state |
| Workmanship cover ending | your contract’s term |
| The annual service a warranty requires | the manufacturer’s interval |
Every one of these is on the free tier.
Photographs and documents
Unlimited, free, and attached to the job they belong to.
A photograph carries the day it was taken, not the day you got round to adding it. A document sits on the project, the contractor and the invoice it belongs to. So a warranty claim in year six is a search, not an afternoon.

Checklists
Every checklist is free.

Questions
Before you start
Is this a way to find contractors, like Angi or Thumbtack?
What happens to my record if I stop paying?
How much will it actually interrupt me?
Do I have to enter years of old work?
Do you tell me whether my contract is fair?
Start with the last thing you paid somebody to do.
One contractor, one invoice, one date. That is already a warranty window and a registration deadline, which is the whole thing working on the first day.
1 Satisfy Home is free for one active project. Satisfy Home+ renews until cancelled; prices, renewal terms and the cancellation method are shown in full before you pay and on your Account page. Warranty terms, registration requirements and cancellation rights vary by manufacturer, product and state; the terms that bind you are the ones in your own documents. Deposit limits, home-solicitation cancellation windows and lien notice periods are set by state law and change. Severe-weather alerts use public weather-service data and are not a guarantee of any condition at your property. Whether a cost is a capital improvement is determined by your own tax position.
